Lowering the water level

Hey guys ... I just recently put a new wet/dry on my 55gal with a sump. My question is ... since I put the wet/dry in the water level is as high as it can go (touching the black trim at the top of the tank). Will shutting the return pump off and stopping the overflow ... then removing some water ... and then turn everything back on lower the water level? or will I just have to add this water back in cause the return flow/siphon flow won't be equal. Does this make sense?

Shutting off the pump and removing water from the tank will not lower the operating level in the tank...
As long as the overflow rate is greater than the return pump rate,
the tank level is set by the inner box of the overflow unit...
Depending on the make, you may be able to adjust the level by lowering the inner box/ or "teeth".
The water level will remain constant in the main tank at whatever level you set it up at...any change in volume (from evaporation, leakage,or removal) will show up in the sump level.
Another possibility is that your return pump rate is equal to or a little greater than the over flow rate and is "gaining" on it...
this will cause a rise in tank level and eventual overflow over the top of tank if not corrected/balanced.

Lower your overflow...this will lower the level...if your cant lower it...you can cut the cut outs a little deeper...as far as what you said you would like to try...that doesnt work when you are using an overflow/sump setup...as mentioned...the water level difference will be in the sump...
