Lots of people do it.
I like to have at least enough room for a mag float between rock and glass.
Better flow and less algea if theres that extra inch buffer zone. JMO

Is it better to have less algea even if its unseen?

yes as far as nusiance algae such as hair algae. I have my rocks stacked against my glass but have enough holes/caves that I have pretty decent flow behind my rocks.
