there is life on both cured and uncured. the difference is....well... you are exactly right..... uncured rock stinks. it does this because a lot of things die during shipping and collecting and stuff. this is called die off. It will cause your amonia to spike and may kill many of your inhabitants. you must either cycle uncured rock in a different tank such as a rubbermaid container and a few powerheads until it smells like the ocean, and after a few full water changes the amonia level in the container is at 0, or you can cure your tank with it as long as there are no creatures in there already.
I was also told by the LFS about my 55 that already has fish living within, that I could add less then 5 lbs of live rock at a time, once every 2 week to a month, not totally cured would be fine. They said that it was equivlent of adding one fish. My friend told me that also. Anyone else that has suggestions? :notsure:
