LR and Skimmer

I have a new 180
I need a skimmer for a FOWLR tank.... any suggestions?
Also I need to buy some LR... my friend told me to go and buy landscaping rock and rinse it extremely well and buy a few lbs LR to save $
Has anyone ever done this...?
Where is the best online place to buy LR and what kind is best for its price?

I'm not for sure on the skimmers, many brands out there. Depends really on how much you want to spend.
You can use regular rock & seed it with actual live rock. However I wouldn't recommend it for a few reasons. First you need to get something made for aquariums or that is safe for aquariums. All rock isn't so be careful. You can also make rock out of sand & cement mix. Go to GARF .org for more info on that. Secondly live rock not only provides shelter, but also beneficial bacteria & organisms which can play an important role in filtration & the overall status of your tank. It would take a while to seed it where it is comparative to real live rock. Also even better some LFSs & online dealers sell base rock, which basically is live rock without as much life & looks. A lot of people use this in big tanks to save on costs as it tends to be a lot cheaper than actual live rock. We are not allowed on this forum to talk of other dealers other than here. Lots of places have good stuff & I've heard SWF's is not bad neither.

I bought decent base rock off the web for under $2 per pound. I then added some live rock at $6 per pound. The base rock now looks just as good as the live rock and is purpled up nicely. The baserock is actually full of holes and nice and light. I have seen some homemade that is not as nice looking and weighed a ton.
