LR from the ocean

I live right near the ocean and routinely go snorkeling a few miles offshore. Can I take LR from the Ocean from a clean source (not the beach) and use it in my tank. I'm about to setup and start cycling my 55G so the rocks would go into a fresh tank. I'm planning to have only LS,LR, and fish no corals. So can it be done. Please say yes so I can save over 300 bucks. :

Yes you can do it if it is legal where you are. I know that in Hawaii, for example, taking LR or corals from the ocean is illegal. Just please be considerate of the surroundings. If you do harvest some LR from the ocean, try to do as little damage to the surrounding area as possible. Don't kill 200 pounds of corals in exchange for 40 pounds of LR.

It might not be legal but there is a company that was puting rock in the golf and into the ocean around the keys leting it seed then saleing it online untill the storm took them out last year. I read on here all the time it aint safe but where do these people think this stuff come froms anyway.

Yeah I totally understand about harming the coral and other wildlife. I've seen rocks that I could pick up without doing any harm to the surrounding area. I've been told by my LFS that its not a good idea to get LR from the ocean but didnt specify why. Maybe because he sells them for $6/lb, that might have something to do with it..
. What preparations would I need to make if I did get the rocks from the ocean before putting them in my tank. Thanks for the replies.

i dont think you should take it from the wild for any reason you have no real idea what all your taking with you for all you know you could be taking the last of somthing you cant even see and how do you realy know what damage is ? the usa spends tons of money every year to figure out what damage we have done to our water and they still have no idea so im not realy sure how you can say ill do no damage ,now days the only place to see some corals and the like is in a pet store or in someones tank because its all gone just so are friends say wow nice tank
I was in a companey that mined rock in pa they got it by the ton and in there office cut into a stone was this "leave no rock unturned" if we take it all now with no real idea what we are doing dont we kinda screw our kids
so if you cant pay the $6. a lbs I dont think you need the rock

The truth is it's coming from the ocean no matter what. Either it is just wild rock or a company placed it there & harvests it.

if this was a spelling board id care about Punctuation.

yes most rock comes from the the wild , but thease places have rules they follow and must comply with them.. Keep in mind the rocks that hes talking about belong to the state and if nothing else it stealing unless you have permits , I dont know of anyplace in the usa were you can go into any waterway or body of water and take wild things without permits.

I understand your point but like others have said here, it comes from the ocean regardless who takes it. The rocks I'm talking about are rocks that are lying in the floor and not touching any coral. I mean do you really think if I take 70 lbs of rock from the ocean that I will harm the eco system or take with me the very last of any life form. The chances are slim. So all rocks belong to the state, what about the creatures living in the rock, or the algae on the rocks, is that their property too? Again I understand where you are coming from and I try to be conscience of the environment but seriously I don't think taking a few rocks is that big a deal.
Thanks

i would have to agree with xxxgreg,, i am self employed and i have permits that i have to pay,, i am sure these lfs have rules and permits that they have to follow from the states, the same as i do. everyone is just trying to make a living, pay your dues just like every one else...i pd $9.00 dollars a pound, and i got 90lbs of it.. this is why we have rules and laws, cause if one person does it, then everyone will do it.....so please support your lfs, its not cheap being in your own business sometimes. but my husband and i love working for our selfs, even though its not cheap to be self employed, just because of all the rules and permits the state requires from us. i am not trying to start anything, i cant tell you what to do, just to think about it before you do, that way in the long run there are no regrets,,,good luck to you and i wish you the best....(bad company, brings bad character 1 chorithains 15;33 ) have a great day...ginarox

It is defintely illegal in Florida to take live rock and corals. I believe some see fans and some fish you are able to take for recreational purposes only. It may be OK if you are in international waters, I am not sure about that.
Those people that place rocks in the ocean to seed them and then sell should have permits from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to do so. If they dont, they would be liable for LARGE fines.
So I believe you may be putting yourself at risk. Also, here in Florida we dump treated sewage out into the ocean via large pipes. Thats why people say that toxins may enter your system if you use stuff from the ocean.

Well no joke, I wasn't saying that they just went in & took everything. I was just stating the truth of the matter not whether someone gets permits or not. I'm sure that the LFS also gets it from someone, not going & getting it theirselves. Like Walt & Smith, maybe......
I too own my own business.

sorry i didnt want to step on anyones toes, i was just stating my opinion, i just know that our business requires us to pull permits, and if it is a commercial job, then we have to go through the health department to get an ok, before we can even start a job, please forgive me.. and have a great day.....ginarox

no its cool Im glad that everyone one can say what they think your not steping on any toes. this is what everyone of us has been fighting for to be free and give everyone a chance.BUt we all must follow the rule set forth even if they dont always work.
without rules we'd all be short lived.

Ok, Im prob gonna get flamed for this, but his is only my exp. Besides the "moral" aspect of it (ie getting in trouble, getting fined, its illegal, other ppl need permits or what not) and running the risk that the rock might be contaminated, there is no problem with getting live rock from the ocean. I myself have setup a couple of SW tanks and I have a place in the keys so the live rock is readily <sp?> avail. Nothing has happened to me yet. The worst this that happened to me is that I got 3 mantis shrimp which I was able to get out. So in all honesty I say go for it if you really want to.
