I am very curious to ask, would it be a bad idea to get LR from teh ocean, i leave near crystal cove, and im planning on going to the beach and the beach has a ton of rocks, would this type of rock be bad for a SW aquarium after being cured?? im curious to know? has anyone had or heard of such experience?

If you mean Crystal Cove, CA the be prepared to go to jail.
You can, however, collect up to 50 lbs of driftwood per day.

Have you been to the tidepools at Cabrillo National Monument. It's an excellent hike along the ocean with caves and tidepool wildlife. Well worth the $15 annual fee.

I'm not really familiar to anything in California...but I would say going into the ocean breaking off/ or getting broken rock out is 9 times outa 10 illegal....will you get caught? Probably not...If the rock just so happens to "wash up onto the beach" then I would assume it would be free game... collecting LR off the beach would be like collecting shells off the beach right? And you don't see shell collectors being arrested for taking shells off the beach!

Actally, removing shells from Crystal Cove is illegal. But, like you said, I've never seen anyone busted for it. I'd hate to be first, though.

collecting live rock from water is illegal unless you have a license. it also is not recommended to use anything from i believe around 100miles from shore due to pollution. i definitely wouldn't use anything off the beach for my tanks. have you ever swam the ocean? nasty crap near shorelines.
make your own, it's cheap, easy and you can shape it up however you want.

Large container, powerhead, heater and salt. Salt is available at your LFS. Mix it to your salinity and add PH buffer if needed, and voila. Best to let it mix for 24 hrs or so prior to water change.

Also wanted to add that you should use RO water like what the vending machine outside your grocer sells for 25 cents/gal.

around here, we use portland cement. it's a very clean fine cement without rocks. mix it with crushed coral which is very easy to get for free these days and rock salt. add your water until it's like play doh rock. shape it up in a tub of dry saltwater safe sand however you like. the dry sand makes it really easy to make holes and whatever. the sand will wash away after it's set up. if you can fit it into your toilet tank it will cure really fast. it's like a water change every time you flush. the rock salt will dissolve out, leaving it really light and porous so when it's introduced to the tank life will immediately fill it up. i cure 3weeks toilet and 2 or so weeks in a holding tank with a piece from an already live tank.
