LR in the old.w/d ?

Hello all,
Just wondering?in a well establihed reef tank, can one take out bio-balls and put in lr in the well and bring water level up to cover the rock... would or could it help/hurt the system?
what do you think? could work.. i think...

This is a great idea. I've heard of others that have done it,and will do it myself once my liverock can handle the bio load by itself. The only problem is with filling up the sump. What about over flowing in a power outage.

good answer....but how about a overflow tank...say a 5gal tank on the side with a drain from w/d to small tank...?but hey it just in thought

I've heard only positive things from people who have replaced bio balls with live rock. I've also been told that it's a good way to lower nitrates(some believe that bio balls keep nitrates up). I have been considering doing the same.

If you have enough live rock in your tank there is no need to replace the bio balls with anything.
