I'm like a kid on Christmas morning....! Any special Do's and Don'ts for stacking it in my tank (other than making sure it's sturdy!)? I'm happy that is smells good - it was shipped well (from this site). Lots of light green, purple, orange and dark red....

It is a predatory shrimp that belongs only in a species tank. They will kill off the life in your tank. They have club like claws that they smash open shells with. They are quick, and somewhat clever (for a shrimp). You don't want your hand near it, because they have a reputation of being able to actually break bones. There are ways to get them out, and people deal with them all the time. I did not get one on my LR, and most others do not either. It does happen, but don't be afraid to get LR because of that.
There are a lot of other things that come on LR that are really fun to watch. Seeing new life appear from the rock was a lot of fun for me. I got a lot of mini brittles, fan worms, snails, and the like from mine.
If you have a stocked tank all ready, some advice... let the LR sit in a bucket of tank water for a few days with a pump, to allow for some die off. You will always have a little die off in transporting, but there may be a little more for shipped LR. If it was cured and picked up from your LFS, I'd say put it right in.

Thanks Buzz! Actually, my fish are in a quarantine tank. Last week I accidently started a mini-cycle so I decided to take the opportunity to boost my LR up to the recommended amount and let it cycle through. I also took the media out of my canister and plan to use it for circulation only - my fingers are crossed that after the cycle my filtration will be all biological (+ protien skimmer). Do you think this will be ok? I plan to get a sump going soon:)

If you have a DSB, and that much LR along with a skimmer, you should be fine. You may not even need a sump. But that's a matter of preference. Sounds like you had a good plan with the timing of adding the rock.

if you don't rinse it in carbonated water, try mixing one cup salt to two cups water and squirt it in the holes it will burn the shrimp alive. I just got a mantis shrimp as a hitch hiker this week in my new rock. he is dead now killed in action. but that workes really well. good luck

the most important thing is to go very slow with your tank, mine been two years now. you don't want your tank to cycle again by adding not completly cured rock.. be patience enjoy

Worst part about the mantis shrimp is they can get out and usually have enough time to get from the tank to a bed. Next thing you know your toes are getting piched

[hr]
...or you get that icky feeling of somethign crawling up your back. Did I also mention that in an average human's life they eat about 9 spiders in their sleep. Think about that and try getting to sleep.

you're saying that if i put my hand in the tank to grab him out (hypothetically) and he latched onto my finger, it could break a finger???
that's how i'm taking this whole thing...am i missing something?
how f'n big are they?

dont worry, very few people get a mantis with their rock. i see you live in jersey too. where were you planning on getting your live rock. i need some too. i usually order it online since most stores in our area only carry horrible rock. we might be able to get a better deal if we get a couple of people together and buy in bulk.

sweet...that's a good idea...
i'm afraid that the rock i'm gonna get is gonna have one, then next thing you know, it breaks my glass, aquarium goes on the floor, then the shrimp is running around my apartment, ready to break anything i shove at it, including my fingers, toes, ...just kinda freaked about it....
or, i put it in the tub with freshwater to flush him out, then the bastage would be snapping at me, etc...
yeah, i'm in NJ...i've been going to Absolutely Fish in Clifton, NJ.

absolutely fish is a good store, but their prices are way too high for me. rt 4 aquarium's prices are high too, but at least the corals they sell are corals and not small frags like absolutely fish's. they wanted 90 bucks for a 3" frag of pulsing xenia! i got 4 pieces bigger than that from a local reefer and all i gave him was about 10 snails that cost me no more than $3.00. there are alot of hobbyists in our area, so theres always someone who has something to trade. since you are setting up your tank check out the new jersey reefers club on reef central. alot of nj reefers post used equipment and livestock over there. it may save you some cash. heres a link to the club.
