the guy at the LFS told me to watch for them, but i wasn't particalrly worried, 'cause i figured my moray would just eat them. would he, or would they actually be a danger to him?

it probably depends on the size of the eel. if you have a mantis you'll probably notice it pretty quick. most people who get a mantis usually notice because their fish start to go missing one by one.

i'm peicing it together right now. so far, i have the salt, 100W heater, and SeaTest Hydrometer. I still have to get a powerhead, filter, live sand, and live rock. Once I get the powerhead and filter, then i was going to mix up the saltwater and let it ride.
nah, i wouldn't be ordering the LR till around xmas time. it'll probably happen after you get back from vacation though.
i'll def. talk to you then about it.
i'm still freaked about the mantis....eeek...

just shoot me an email when you ready. ill give you some media from my tank that you can use to seed your filter. with that and the live rock you'll probably be able to cycle your tank in 10 days to 2 weeks.

alti, that is not very reassuring. :)

would spraying the rock with fresh water bring that bastage out of hiding? would harm anything else in the rock?

how long have you had the rock? if you havnt had anything disappear or heard any clicking noises at night i really wouldn't worry about it.

I don't have the live rock yet...I'm just preparing myself for the worst.
Having a possible predator that not only can kill everything in my tank, and also have the claw force of a .22 caliber bullet, it kinda scares me a bit.
plus, if i get it and my tank is just cycling with no fish, then i wouldn't see any disappear. i guess i'd only hear the clicking...

i wouldnt worry if we are going to be ordering online. they ship the rock pretty dry and alot of the crabs and inverts usually crawl out of the rock looking for water. there were a bunch of them on the bottom of the box the last time i ordered and i have yet to see any crab in the tank that i did not put there. the ammonia levels during the cycle probably killed them now that i think about it.

gotcha. knowing my luck, i'd end up getting some rock with one in it. i just don't want my first sw experience to be a nightmare.

your probably going to avoid alot of nightmare since you are doing the right thing and doing some research here before you start the tank. i wish i knew about these message boards before i started.

The time I really worry about Mantis shrimp is when the cats go missing.

Hey don't worry about something that hasn't happened. Why don't you guys get phone numbers and call each other. Sounds like you could have a great friendship what with all you have in common. Wish I had someone here in the Washington DC area to chill with. I'm addicted to the saltwater world but I feel no one understands except my boyfriend. Good luck:p
