LR Question/Problem

Hello,
My tank has been up for about 8 months and I used to have a bad red hair algae problem but that is gone and fixed now. I noticed that all my liverock is a bleached white color. Is this normal? some random patches are reddish like coraline is trying to build but I can not get it to build all over the rock. Is my live rock dead now? My ph and nitrates are 8.6 and about 10-15ppm nitrates.
Specs:
20G High tank
1 damsel & 1 clown fish
4 turbo snails
3 small hermit crabs
Penguin bio wheel filter
1 powerhead
T-5 Lighting fixture about 28W for now.
Any help would be great
thanks
Mark

Hi

How did you fix the original problem?
Did you use some additive to clean up the algae?

Hi,
Yes, I used a product alled red slime remover..costs a little more but cleaned up the red hair algae problem in a few days. Now I need to get some coraline build up. My LR looked white since the day I bought it.

The bleach whit spots are probably dead coraline. Your live rock should be fine. Probably turned white because of coraline die off for whatever reason I've taken out power heads to cleaned them and within a day the coraline has turned white. the live coraline will eventually spread over these areas it just takes time of coarse having good water conditions helps

If you have existing coraline on the glass in areas you don't want you can scrape it off with a razer and it will help with the spreading the coraline.

check your parameters over the next few weeks. that red slime remover is an antibiotic. it kills bacteria. good and bad. i don't suggest using it. it will make the red slime disappear momentarily, but the cause of the red slime remains. it will return unless you deplete the tank of the excess nutrients that caused it in the first place.
