LR Question

I put some LR in my 58g tank last weekend. I added some additional LR this weekend. The LR I put in last weekend is beginning to form something white on it. It looks like the enamel on teeth. Is that normal? The tank was started two weeks ago. It also looks like the original LR is getting a dark algae. Is that normal?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Here are some possibilities: the white spots on the LR could be some die-off of coralline. Did the LR come mail-order or just out of a tank at your LFS? If it came out of a tank right into your tank, there really shouldn't be any die-off. You could go into the tank with an old toothbrush and give the white spots a bit of a scrub.
Regarding the algae: depends on the water you used to start the tank. Tap water? Could be the culprit. Most around here favor purified RO/DI water. I think its phosphates that contribute to algae in tap water. Hope this helps. Good luck with your tank.

coraline, when it starts to regrow, ND OR when it dies is generally whitish or offwhite in color, do NOT scrub it off, let it be, if it looks like spots where nothing was before, thea means it is probably starting to grow, it will darken and change color in time.

Thanks for the responses. The lr came straight from the tank at the lfs. I'll let it go for a while and see what happens.

just one more opinion, not that fshub needs the plug but he nailed it on the white. Leave it alone and it should slowly start to turn pinkish then purple. Mine went through that stage when my tank was new too
