LR shipped dry?

I was just in a LFS and they received a shipment in. LR came in boxes - shipped dry. Not damp, almost bone dry, not wrapped in newspaper. Would you call this LR? I bought 7 lbs from this same store a few months ago and its purple, but has nothing growing on it - stripped.
Any comments?

It might be Base Rock? I know my LFS receives their base rock dry, but the other LR and such is kept damp with newspaper, like you stated this one wasn't. Sounds like you bought some expensive BR.

Sounds like he is using baserock for a buck a pound and selling it after it cures for what? 5.99 per pound or more. Nice little profit. Unless he was unhappy with the rock that he recieved as well.

No - he said it was LR and put in in his LR tank at $7.99 a lb. I thought it should at least be wrapped in newspaper.
Its the same store who sold me aptasia, I know, I know... quit laughing... I bought this coral frag (dead) with some aptasia on it which I thought was an anemone. I was brand new.

Yeah, sounds like expensive Base Rock. I can get it at $120 for 100lbs, as opposed to your LFS, where it's $800. Stuff like that makes me mad.

Would you guys call the LFS and say something? Or let it go and not buy their LR. How do we know other LFS's aren't doing this? How can we tell if its LR?

Call and tell them you think they made a mistake, give them a chance to weasel out of it. If they deny that it's base rock find another LFS.

I say sneak in a camera and get pictures of their next delivery... Then post flyers all over town and put them out of business!! mua ha ha ha......
No, seriously, I would bring in the receipt from your purchase of LR from them and demand a partial refund for it, since they sold you base rock. If they don't do this, then boycott them for life.... Or until they get something really cool in.

I just called another store and they told me all LR should be shipped wet. But they said base rock can be sold as LR because micro organisms are or used to be in there. Its up to the LFS.
I was also told mine should be growing spores on it. I can'e see anything. Maybe my hermits are eating them? LR has been n there 2 months.

I heard the same thing from my LFS. "We get all our rock form Chicago. We go and pick it up our selves and bring it back dry." DRY! I said. "Yes, it grows back." They had the best rock I have so far. But my experience is limited. $6 a pound and I have been back there twice. I got some LR online and it is half the price and ok but no where near as full of life.
P.S OT I have a few friends in plainfield and my sis lives in Lockport. You guys have nice storms down there!

Well - maybe its ok then. I just called the store and they told me thats how its shipped. I said it seems like they're selling base rock at LR prices.. no comment from them.. oh well.. I'll drop it, but I think I'll try another LFS..
Yes -we live in tornado alley. I used to work in Lockport btw..
Phil - when you say full of life - do mean you can actually see things on it? I see nothing. Its purple and brown though.. Maybe I'll take a picture later and show you guys.. maybe it takes longer than 2 months?

I was always told dont know how true it is but even the best lr takes a good bit of time to get a lot of growth back, I am feeling that this is true just for the fact that my rock is "new" and just within the 2 weeks of having it I already see lots of growth that wasnt there before just hope that the growth becomes more full. A lot of people told me that a tank doest fully mature for like a year, like I said just what I have been hearing. Maybe this will help with your frustrations. I was kind of bumbed that I didnt get any hitchikers with the exception of 1 or 2 bristol worms, but then again I would rather have no hitchhikers then have say a mantis shrimp!!!! I heard stories that they have been resposible for shattering tanks! Wow that would be one dead shrimpy if I got a hold of him:D

2 weeks with growth? I've had mine 2 months with no growth, but then again I have hermits. Could these be eating what might grow on them? I'm wondering if I got base rock and it'll take a long time for "things" to grow on it.
