Hope someone can guide me on this one, I am setting up a 20 long that I am going to frag from my DT into (1st time fraging too
) and was wondering if I need LR in the frag tank? I plan on going bare bottom with no live stock, old HOB skimmer - Simple Zoa's and Shrooms for starters.
Also the second part of my question is - how much water moment do I need in a 20L frag tank? I have a small powerhead that is not being used and was hoping to use that, at least for the time.
Thanks and happy reefing

Excellent

I was setting up the 20L yesterday and my heater broke
but a buddy is giving me a old one to use so hopefully this weekend I will get some fragging done - I did some eagle eyes and PPE a few days ago to trial myself on and they look wonderful, so now at least I am ready mentally

TY again.

if there will be no live stock, maybe consider modding the HOB filter into a fuge. cause a small fuge on a 20L with just frags would be very beneficial to your cause...as far as flow with the HOB and the small powerhead in the other corner, should be fine for flow. your going bare bottom wich is fine. but with live rock, you can have some in the fuge for natural filtration and lots of rubble scattered on the bottom glass for attaching frags. hope this helps....couple questions....wut type of powerhead is this small powerhead. also wut type of lites are you using...

The PH is a little one.... "Zoo med" model PS-20 - online it says its rated at 160GPH - so maybe 120 in real life

lights are Coralife 96w power compacts (24" model) with about 3 months or so on the bulbs

I was also thinking of getting a cleaner shrimp for the tank - just to clean up what doesn't make it to the HOB unit - good / bad idea?

If this is not going to be plumbed into another system with live rock and live sand then you are going to need those if you want your frags to grow well. Going bare bottom does not mean taking LR and LS out of a system but rather relocating it to another part of the system like your sump. For flow that little power head will probably not do much. If you told us what model it is that would help. The smaller power heads will keep the water circulating but are not good for creating flow. A Koralia 2 would work well for a 20 long. 20 pounds of Sand and 20 pounds of Live rock will make a world of difference for the system and will not cost you much if you find a good source. I never pay more than $2 pound for Live rock. I wouldnt put shrimp in such a small system that grows frags because it may pick at the frags in their weakened state. All you need are a few turbo snails. Since you are going to have the HOB filter I would put in one small fish, probably a six line wrasse to control Amphipods. With no predators they will do well and eat you zoos.
