LR without light?

I was wondering if I put some LR in my sump, would it help filteration if it didnt have any light? I have 3inches of sand in there already, along with my seaclone 100 skimmer, heater and mag 7. The sand is in there cause I was going to make it a sump/fuge....but decided to add a fuge above the tank later on.

i had live rock in my sump without a light. but then i just put one in because i want to make it a fuge/sump.

Thanks fishman...yeah I am going to make a seperate refuge above my DT later on, so dont want this to be a fuge, just wanted some more filteration.
Anyone else?

as far as filtration it will do the same in an area void of light that it will in the tank. it just doesnt grow coralline or other phosynthetic things on it.
