Has anyone bought LS sealed in plastic bags? Seems to me the LS wouldn't be live after awhile. LFS sells them in 20 lb bags for $40. Any comments?

Everyone keeps mentioning play sand from HD. My HD didn't have it so I used the HD quickrete sand blasting sand. Very fine, white, and contains silica. I'm sure its not sterilized. I only have a 10gal so I took the chance...Has anyone else used this?

I have the CaribSeas Agronite Live sand and it now has benificial critters..:)
I thought about the Instant Ocean, but one ingredient was copper sulphate, or something similar, but I have heard good comments on that also...
My cycle was about 2 weeks using the live sand and simi-cured rock..

I used the same stuff. Been in my 90g for 3 years. No problems so far.

20 bucks a bag is DOUBLE what my LFS sells the exact same thing at. You can just about get "actual" live sand with critters and all for 2 bucks a pound. It's nice stuff, but your LFS is overcharging. 2 bags of that in a box is 40 bucks here.

A LFS in my area sells it $40 a bag - $2 a lb. Another store - Pet Paradise in Downers Grove, sells it out of their tanks at $3 a lb... outrageous...

The bagged live sand isn't really live. It just has bacteria in it. True ls will have bugs and critters in it.

Hey slick, i have to disagree with you on that. Nature's Ocean live sand is bagged and contains those bugs.

I bought the Natures ocean was pleased to see little clams scooting around as I was adding it to my already established tank. I would not use a sand that contains silica. I read about it from a link that was supplied here about live sand, it stated that in play sand there a strong possiblity it will contain silicate, the last I checked silicates ain't good, I wouldn't want to have to battle that extra problem in a difficult hobby. The natures ocean I am aware of......has no bugs, critters, clams, whatsoever. It contains sand and bacteria......that's it. And that's why it is cheaper than buying actual live sand from an established tank. Good looking sand, and I have bought about 300 pounds of it to date, but no bugs......

I've used the Nature's Ocean "Bio-Active" Argonite and I love it. It only took me 2 weeks to cycle with that stuff. I put 40 lbs of it on top of 60 lbs playsand and the play sand has little bubbles in it now.

Sammy, I had little teeny tiny clams scooting, at first I was thinking the "mantis" after watching I saw little tiny clams scoot around, I know they weren't in my tank before that, I guess I got a good 40lbs. By the way it was 20 bucks per bag each bag was 20 lbs. Still adding more slowly but surely til I get the 4 in. DSB.

Explain to me how bugs can live in a bag that is sitting on a shelf with no heat or anything like that?

Hi All, I have had no bugs in my 140#'s of natures ocean, the sand is nice and fine. I did seed it with LS activator from another site. Now it's full of bug and critters. HTH

Well Slick, i really cannot explain you how those bugs were alive sitting on the shelf, but one thing i now for sure.... right after addidng this sand to my tank(which was with no bugs ,that's i also know for sure) the same day i had TONS of them all over my glass, rocks, whatever!
Just a personal experience. This sand i was adding twice, into 2 different systems with the same result: no bugs before - tons after adding.

I wrote to natures ocean and asked them if the bagged sand contained bugs, pods, or anyother little critter. Then told me that the only thing in there is bacteria that will help your tank cycle faster. They said that if they added bugs to the bags they would die from temps being to high or to low. Jut thought I would share.
