macro algae for reef tank?

I would like to use macro algae or plants to removes nitrates in my display tank. I don't have a refugium. Is there anything I can use that won't get out of control and that my crabs won't eat? i have a 34g RSM.

fish, anything that is going to consume the amount of nutrients we want to export, is going to be a fast grower and invasive. as far as the crabs go, if you put chaeto or bubble caulerpa in the display, it would be ugly, but i believe the growth would outweigh the amounf consumed by a few crabs.
