well I have the Sigma 150...It has been reviewed many times as being one of the best..You get a killer focal range, nice working distance so you dont have to get as close to living things and might spook em..HSM focus motor, non extending front..RAZOR sharp 3 limiting switches for AF when you are out shooting it as a tele lens as well.
Other great options would be Tokina 100, Sigma 105, tamron 90, Canon 100
I wouldnt go below 90mm as you will find it hard to get a 1:1 magnification for stuff towards teh back of tanks if you have a lrger one.
I dont have a Rebel I have a 1D Mark II..BUT I have had this lens when I had my Rebel XT back in the day and its just a great lens

I bite the bullet and ordered Tokina 100. Price was very reasonable and if I don't like, I should be able to sell it fairly easily and not lose much.

there is not one thing you shouldnt like about that lens..its built like a tank, image quality is razor sharp.
