Mad Trigger in reef??

Hi all, Ok has anyone experienced this. We have a niger trigger about 5 inches long head to fin, When its feeding time, this only just started a short while ago, when we open the canopy then the glass tops on our bowfront our trigger comes up to the top for food ok normal, We add small amounts of food at a time so that not much if any hits the sand, If we are not quick enough old niger the trigger will spit water out of the tank. I have heard of some fish doing this to catch food by nocking it into the water, but this is not the case, I wonder whose being trained here me or him, anybody else have this phenomonine, just curius...I think its pretty cool and neat to watch...cya :D

You answered your own Question,Yes it is normal, and Yes they do it to knock food into the water. I'm just trying to figure out WHY would anyone have a trigger in a reef tank.

Hi Mr Salty, Why not have a trigger in a reef tank? He was the second fish put in, he doesn't bother anyone or anything. But he will only be in there a short time longer, we're hoping our new 200 gal will be in by the weekend, after the cycle he will be going into it. (FO) Now, we had a undulated that went back to the lfs, he ate all our crabs and snails. See we bought them when we we're new to the hobby, the local lfs sold us everything for our setup, he didn't bother to tell us about the cycle or what goes in or what don't. I know we should have read, read, read, we didn't research enough. Oh Well, lesson learned! Now we read everything we can get our hands on..He has been in there since December 2000, without any problems. The only fish in the reeftank
will be our clarkie clown with his anemones.
Thanks for the info. Lisa :D

I guess triggers are hit or miss....i have had niger's in reef tank before and never a problem.as long as you put them in last.I currently have a 75 gallon reef with a nice size pinktail trigger...not a problem..loves hanging around my cleaner shrimp too!!! Shrimp will hang on him to clean him...real cool to watch.I do keep him well fed.
