I say at least once a month if you dose calcium and kalk. I had my impeller seize on a mag9.5, I now have a eheim and the mag for a backup.

If I don't clean my mag pumps every 2-3 weeks they become unreliable. I have two 12's that I swap out every few weeks
I've had 2x1" SS's for over 4 years now. I did send them back to be rebuilt (40.00 each) before I started up my current tank. I ran them for 3 years with no cleaning or problems at all.
After rebuilding they were better then new. They replaced all internal parts including the motors.

i haven't cleaned my mag in almost 2 years with no problems, surges and all, but i have heard that once the calcium builds ups you might have problems restarting. i have my alk at about 3.8-4.0 and calcium about 440-470.

Your Alk is 4.0 dkh or meq? I think it has a lot to do with how you dose alk/calcium and wether or not you use kalkwasser. I dose Bionic 2 part and kalk directly into the sump chamber that houses the return pump so it gets a lot of concentrated calcium and alk buffer through the pump. I'd say you definately need to clean your pump though.

could also have a steel Titanium impeller shaft instead of ceramic..
I don't recall what kind of shaft my Sedra pump has. I hardly ever have to service it (ER skimmer) I don't have any problems with that pump.
