No to me they are not a waste of money because then when the glass is dirty you can just use the magnet without putting your hand in the tank.

Im assuming you mean the Mag Float. I have one and it works great for me. I keep it in the tank all the time. The magnets are strong enough to hold together between the inside and outside glass and you just move it around and it cleans the inside glass.

You have two pieces, one in your tank that has a scuffy surface, and the second piece that is outside your tank. they attach to each other by a magnet, the glass is in the middle, like a sandwhich. you move the outside part up and down the glass, the inside scuffy part cleans your glass.

not only that but also regular high-powered magnets are great for attaching to powerheads for easy moving anything inside the tank can be attached to magnets for easy moving...

Very good point!!!! and do spend a little extra to get the Mag Float... the cheaper magnet cleaners are not worth having IMO.

I had an old mag float from a freshwater tank that sat in the basement on top of a tank hood for about a year. It was occasionally splashed with water during cleanups and whatnot. Over the course of that year it developed a heavy layer of rust.
Definately something to keep in mind. I'm not sure if magnets are even capable of rusting, but it may be the case that the cheaper ones utilize iron or some other metal inside one of the potions of the mag float.
ps- if you have a smaller glass tank (55 gallons or smaller) and don't mind getting your hands wet, a razor blade is a great way to clean the tank. Just make sure that you wipe it down after each use or it will rust overnight.

How old was the mag float?? Mine has no metal exposed at all to rust?? Was it a mag or another brand??

Unfortunately I don't have it anymore. I'm pretty sure it was a cheaper brand name and not actually a "mag float." It had the magnet covered only by felt on the outside mag and abrasive fabric on the inside one. It wasn't enclosed by molded plastic.

magnets can rust and they leave a nasty stain on your glass.
They do by the way work great though. I prefer the low profile ones myself as they get behind the rock work and stuff better. But that is just MO

Mag float = great bang for the buck.
BUT be careful when cleaning near the bottom of your tank because it's easy to get sand trapped between the glass and the cleaner, which can scratch glass and EASILY scratch acrylic. Easily remedied (just pull the magnet away and let it float free for a second).
