definatly without a doubt a Marine Betta, beautiful fish, nice, gets 8 inches fine in a 55 and definatly the main attraction.

angels need a very stable tank, plenty of live rock and the minimum time for a tank would be at least 6 months
(rick)i would get a hardier fish check out a fox face. jmo(rick)

Have you looked at the flasher wrasses. I have a cherry head that is always out and really a ham. Not a large fish per say, but very colorful.

Flame Angel...they are so bright and very active. In a 55 you may be limited in the size of the fish you can get. You may think of getting a couple clowns, Flame Angel, a Goby, Blennie, some cleaner shrimp. Those are kinda fun to watch. Butterflys are really cool...just not too good with coral.
PLEASE don't mention the word TANG...the wrath of God will swoop down on this thread...lol.
GOOD LUCK!!!

I would be concerned, here. If the fish did reach 8", he would be 3/4 the depth of a standard 55 gallon..Are they active fish? I agree they are very eye-catching.

they aren't really mean... they are said to be agressive becuase they are in the grouper family and a majority of groupers are mean, but my lfs gets them and put them in their 125 display with a crap load of damsils and the betta seems to be fine, and i wouldn't say any hawk fish is ever the main attraction, just a nice looking background fish in my opinon..

Flame angel. without a doubt the best small show fish ever. It is not aggresive and is extremely colorful. Wait until the tank is older and suplement it with nori sheets and angel formula.
