I have a reef tank that has been going for 1 1/2 years. Within the past two days I have red slime algae growing all over. I have never had any before. What could be causing this, and how do I get rid of it before it spreads even more?

just my opinion but using chemicals to mask te underlying problem is not a solution. NOt to place fault on any one here but something has caused this occurance and you need to find it and solve it the natural way before using a chemical in your tank. although I am sure that person have had success using a chemical to fix a problem how many can truly say that the problem stays away permanently or that some other "thing" did not arise? Just my opinion fellas not trying to get at any here. I may be wrong buut I may also be right. your choice is just that,..........yours.

a nice water change and increased water flow is a great place to start- also RODI can help if the city water is poor quality- after doing that for a while and trying to clean the tank up- it still dosent work- i had great results with chemi clean- good luck

j21kickster is correct in his solutions, if it does not work then why not try it but I just have had bad experiences with using chems to solve problems in the tank. Good luck

Use chemi-clean to get rid of the immediate problem and then fix the problem which is likely overfeeding or a lack of circulation. I had a minor red slime problem last year and this approach worked wonderfully for me with no adverse effects.
