Well, lol I mean they could at all. The settlers probably have never been in the water at all, and would drown in a 6ft pool.
My best second guess, is the Native America chickee's were often deep in thick brush, which helped them weather the storm, better then settlers who cleared the land and built houses out in the open.
Also, without much documentation, I doubt most of the Indians survived the nastiest storm either....
I don't think either of them did either. Settlers or the indians. I would imagine that weathering a hurricane outside would be pretty interesting...

this doesn't look good for those poor floridians.
Why poor Floridians? Gustav is headed towards TEXAS AND/OR LOUISIANA and Hanna has a projected SOUTH CAROLINA PATH? If I were you I would worry about Gustav taking a slightly more western path

Problem is their is going to be a high preasure system and hanna is not going to go to the hurricane grave yard. They are saying the bahamas are going to get hanna but that not saying nothing Fay was saposed to hit in the pan handle then ft myers and ended up hit south of Naples. You all in Texas and Louisiana better watch Gustav if it makes off jamaca and does not touch anymore land you may have another Katrina on your hands.Weather people just don't want to make people panic but the water is prime temp for a major hurricane.

A couple days ago, we had weathermen here saying Cat 5 Cat 5 Cat 5. Then a funny thing happened, it kind of fell apart. And now is a tropical storm. So now they are forcasting 2 or 3.

Hahaha...Teresa I did the same thing the other day! There was a big fish sitting in about 2" of water on top of a drain out back and I scooped it up and took it back to the nearby lake it came from during the storm.
Gotta love the weather today thanks to Gustav...nice and cloudy, cooler, breezy with a little rain gusts.

I'm sure soon enough we'll have Hanna doing the same thing for us in South Florida.

I got some more news there are two more low depression right behind these storms. They are just coming off the coast of Africa.
