Making an old Power Filter into an Overflow

So here is my idea and i would love anyone's suggestions. I have never heard of this being done. I would like to drill the bottom of the filter and cut all the excess plastic off. Would this work? It would be using the pump thing that sucks the water in and everything would be the same except the water would go to the sump instead of the tank. So do you guys think this will work or is it a waste of time?

not to burst your bubble youll never controll flow rate to balance your tank coming back in if the return pump ever went youll have a huge flood were on a overflow box its only a few inches my advice is buy overflow box ther cheap and they work or get a j tube like one from a ehiem canister cut to about 2 inches so its only two inches in your tank conect tubing to it and go to wetdry you will have to start siphon manually but u have to watch you dont loose siphon make sure you ballance tank with wetdry so you cant overflow ive tried many ways ive made wetdrys they all work but the best is an overflow box thers no substatute they only 60-90 bucks its well worth it the hose is bigger you should turn your tank tank over at least10 times per hourif you want directions on how to build a wet dry out of a empty tank email tjake68@AOL.COM ILL GET BACK TO YOU ITS VERY SIMPLE

I do not want a wet dry at all. i will run a sump. How will i not be able to control the flow rate? I will have a line off the return pump to control and regulate flow back to the tank.
