making saltwater

I just recently made a new batch of salt water(4 1/2) gallons and have a powerhead mixing the salt in with the water and was wondering how long i should wait until i put it into my tank

alright just wanting to ask people on here cause the guy at the fish store said to put 2 1/4 cups of salt into the 4 1/2 gallon container and let the powerhead run for 1 hour and then i could put it in... but i guess that wasnt true thank you for your help - Anders

24 hours is about right, you don't want to put it in too early because you will have undesolved particles in the water, then adding those particles to your tank. 24 hours for the mixture to completely mix and for the water to airate.

how long do you suggest i keep the power head in for it has been 1 hour right now and as far as putting the water in should i put a heater in to get it the same temp as my tank water.

yes i suggest putting a heater in there because if you test your salinity before you put that water in your tank and its not at the right temp you wont get a clear reading not to mention you might stress the tank adding water that isnt the same temp:)

leave the powerhead running the whole time otherwise your water will be stationery and build a film on top plus it needs to be airated the whole time to mix the salt in

ok so i have nearly 10 gallons of saltwater in a 10 gallon fish tank with nothing in it but the water and a powerhead at the bottom of the tank is there anything else i can do im still putting a heater in but as far as getting the water filtered like say just a normal 10 gallon filter? Thanks - Anders
