I thought it was a she, but its been chasing my female scooter blenny lately, and from what i have read, 2 females would be ok. My scooter is definetly a female, no raised fan on her dorsal.

Heres my scooter

I think your mandarin is a definite she-fish, as well.
The males have a long, very pointy spine at the top of their dorsal. When they raise this spine it looks very impressive.

Unless the long fin spike has somehow been ripped off or damaged your mandarin is a female. Every fish has it's own little personality. Some are bossy, some are shy, and many like my laid back fire goby do not reflect their species general characteristics.
My guess would be, from your pics, since the mandarin is bigger, she is making sure every body else knows she's top fish.
How many days have past since you introduced your mandarin? One thing to try is to rearrange your LR. That way every one has to establish new territories. :happyfish

Yep, definately a female. She will probably try her best to kill the scooter as they are in competition for the same food.

I have had both fish for almost a yr and this is new behavior. I don't belive the dorsal has been damaged. My tank is 150 and scooter mostly stays away from the mandrin. Thanks.

Most of the time the mandrin passes the scooter without a second look. I guess if it gets nasty, i can put the scooter in my 55 since she eats frozen foods.

That's interesting...Valiant is the first fish I have had that my hubby Brian has ever shown and real interest in. I actually caught him saying good morning to Valiant the other day!!!!

Mine won't stand and watch a horse long enough to see they have a personality like other fish. I once mentioned i would like a SH tank and he asked what for? All they do is hang onto a fake plant and when they do decide to let go, they swim to slow.

No worries...just sit him down and show him the pics and videos of everyone's horses on here, and tell the story of Valiant's adventure: https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/268841/what-fish-do-when-they-think-youre-not-looking
....and if he doesn't fall for Bronco's mini horses....we'll have to take more drastic measures.

I have been keeping up with all the seahorse threads, now i will have to get him interested. But with a 150 and 55, and him having more time to do the maintaince on them, not sure i can convince him, but i guess there are ways
