mandarin died

Just got a new mandarin a few days ago, and just found him lifeless....dang, he was gorgeous too! I have tons of pods so that he could gorge. Am just feeling a little low now. All other fish are doing great, cept this poor little guy, man I feel bad.

Sorry to hear about your loss......it's always tough. I too thought I had an abundance of copepods so I purchased a Mandarin Goby. He started eating right away and I even got him to take some brine once in a while....but he succumbed to an unknown illness and died a week after I got him. I hope the rest of your fish thrive and bring you happiness in this wonderful hobby.

Do you have many other very active fish in your tank or not enough places to hide? Mandarins can be very shy and can get stressed out easily with too much activity around. It's kind of like you feel after spending the day with a bunch of two year olds.

Hey, I feel your pain.
My mandarin just died. I have all the parameters that I needed, 100 gal tank, 100 lbs. LR, pods, etc. He lived for a couple days, then just died.
He was eating fine, didn't have any fish bothering him, etc. I looked at his body, had no obvious attacks, sickness, etc. Just died.
I know that my LFS didn't have enough food for him though. But the moment he dropped into my tank, he started eating like a mad man.
O well, I am chalking it up to a learning experience. A painful, sad one, but a learning experience just the same.

sorry to hear that.
on another note on them even though they start eating right away they have been starving before you we get them some can get over it and others dont recover. all the LFS that I have seen them at are in tanks with out any LR and seeing that most dont switch to prepared foods they dont get much or anything to eat during there stay at the LFS and I IMO some just cant recover from that.
something to think about anyway.

Yes, he had a lot of places to hide, nooks, crannies, caves. About 150 lbs LR......noone picking on him......just a poor little fish that didn't survive.......

I can't explain it, but my mandarin is thriving in my 29gallon. He's been there for two months, and going strong... I have been real lucky. One thing I've got going for me is ALOT of filtration, with tons of copepods, LR, and hiding places... Good luck with your future fish...

I bought a Mandarin a couple of weeks ago but how do I know if he is eating or not? He is constantly on the move and seems to pick things off of the rock but how do I know if he is getting anything or if he is just scouting?
I have 100 lbs of LR with a ton of hiding places.

Mine died a couple of weeks ago and it was doing well in my tank. It even fed on live brine shrimp.
Sorry about the loss
