If your going to keep one in a nano you will need a refugium where the pods can multiply. My tank is a 29gal and my green mandarin has been with me for almost 9 months now. It got fat after i added a CPR HOB refugium.

I have a mandarin in a 29g Biocube. I have about 35-40lbs of live rock and he's healthy and fat... A "pod pile" will help alot, just stack a bunch of rocks in the corner, where other things in your tank can't get to, and the pods will continually reproduce if you drop some sinking pellets back there.
I'm not sure if any of this was said before, didn't have time to read the whole thread, just answering your initial question, that it is possible in a nano, i've seen it done in a 10g... clearly the more rock the better, but it can be done.

Many yrs ago, before I owned a computer, I bought a scooter blenny thinking it was a blenny. I had a 75 gal sumpless tank. I watched this fish pick on rocks for almost a yr, thinking it was eating algae. It got thinner and thinner, looking back I guess I had some pods, but not what i see in my tanks now. Point i am trying to make, it can take a long time to starve one, but eventually, it will starve without a constant supply of pods. I have a scooter who does eat mysis and mandrin who only eats pods, in my 150 and a 25 gal sump/fuge and still I add pods when I don't see them in large numbers in my fuge. I have had both animals for 2 yrs now. Don't experiement with these fish, you have the knowledge that i wish i had all those yrs ago, use it!

I have a mandarin in a 29 gallon tank I'm having very good luck by feeding fresh hatched brine. I just added a 10 gallon fuge. The more live rock the better, you can also seed with pods from your lfs or an online supplier. I use cheato (brillo pad algea) in the fuge its a pod breeding haven. After putting it into the fuge my pod population probably doubled in the first month.
