mandrins need pods for the most part to survive. Some will eat frozen or live brine shrimp, but not usually. They need plenty of LR, that is loaded with pods. The tank should be up about a yr with a fuge for the pods to multiply in.

I have read some folks on this forum that have mandarins that accept prepared food (frozen mysis shrimp) but not many.
My own mandarin totally ignores the food I offer. Totally. Pods, other rock bugs (?) is what she lives on.
You have to have 100lb (give or take a pound) of well established Live Rock to support a mandarin.
Incidentally, mandarins are dragonets, not gobys.

I bought a mandarin about 1 month ago and my 90 gal tank has 90 lbs of live rock, 3 in of aragonite sand and has been up for 1 1/2 yrs. There are not enough pods to support him even though he is eating mysis and brine. I have added pods from an on line site and still not enough. He is getting thinner. I will have to add a fuge or take him back to the store.
Just because a tank has been set up for a year or so with enough live rock doesn't mean it will support a mandarin without a fuge or a constant suppy of pods. Some tanks obviously have more life than others, and I have read as a general rule of thumb that an established tank with enough live rock will support a mandarin for awhile but I am finding this not to be true in my case.
I have not lost anything in a 1 1/2 and hopefully I won't lose this guy, but where my life in the sand went I do not know.

jktenpro, I hope yours does make it! Do you have others that depend on the pod population?
I guess "well established" might be a vague statement. I added my mandarin to a 3 year old tank, that has been upgraded twice in 6 years, some of the rock is that old.
I have an incredible # of pods. When I turn on the lights, it's called curfew and watching those bugs dash into the rocks is pretty funny.
There are places in my rockwork that fish cannot get to. It's a must, so the pods can reproduce.
Research the fish and see where they are found in the wild. It tells a tale.
