Mandarin Overboard!

I've recently had two mandarins jump out of my 400L tank (on separate occasions). Are Mandarins known for this or am I just unlucky?

400l, what does that equal in gallons?
how much rock (lbs) do you have, and how old is the tank?
how many mandarins in the tank?
stray voltage? water parameters?
they aren't common jumpers, so something is contributing to them jumping.

I have never known one to jump. They are usually pretty mellow. Must be something going on. As renogaw mentioned, check for stray voltage. I just hooked up a brand new, never used Quiet One 4000 for sump return and when I was putting my hand in the tank I was feeling a tingleing in a small cut on my finger. I un plugged everything one at a time and found the 4000 to be giving off stray voltage. I plugged in the ground probe and it went away. I can imagine what the livestock must have been going through if I hadn't discovered it and decided to use the ground probe.
They do work and even if this is not what is going on with your mandarins, everyone should use them.
Sorry about your fish, hope you find out what it is.

actually, your fish shouldn't feel the electricity like you do, because they are not grounded. they get hlle and other damage from it, but they shouldnt be able to feel it.

Chances are they are getting startled by something or someone in the tank. This is known to happen when the lights turn on and off. For instance, Blue Spotted Jawfish have a reputation when the lights turn on and off suddenly.

Mandarines don't usualy get spooked by light though, they are mellow fish. In a 100 gallon tank I would not think that light nor other fish would be an issue. In that situation the fish would stay hidden from the aggressive fish. I would definately check out the stray voltage. Nothing else has jumped or been affected? What all is in this tank?

100 % correct. think of your fish in the tank loke a bird on a high voltage power line, they don't feel anything eather. You feel the tingle because you are giving the electricity a path to ground. If you feel a tingle in your tank you should find the source and get rid of it. There could also be a risk of the short causing a fire. Just puting a grounding probe in the tank just covers up a serious problem.
