mandarin question

I just got a mandarin the other day and noticed a very strange thing. He seems to spit things out the top of his head on both sides. If I had to guess I would say it is sand coming out his head but I really can't say for sure. Has anyone seen this?:notsure:

It isn't their defense mechanism. They are sifting through small particles to get microscopic creatures out of the sand or rock, many other types of fish do this...especially gobies. Its totally normal.

The short answer is no, at least not in the sense that you can keep a mandarin by buying a bag of live pods from the LFS each week since most LFS don't sell live pods like they sell live brine shrimp. If you are interested in establishing your own pod population, you may not need to do too much. You probably already have some, and there are ways you can help increase your amount of pods like having a refugium and covering the intake of your power heads with a sponge cover (most PH makers sell this type of accessory). If you want more info, do a search on this board for pods, there have been plenty of threads about pods and mandarins.
