Mandarin with lights off?

I just recently purchased a mandarin for my 55 gal. I have 80 or so # LS and 25#lr. The colors on him are beautiful as you can see in the picture i attached. Right now all i have is 2 20W actinics. When i turn the lights off of the aquarium, I notice that the mandarin changes color to a pale look, and seems to have patches of white near his fins. When the lights come on the white dissapears and color increases dramatically. Could someone please help me on this problem.

changing color at night is normal. however, I think he won't last long.....they require a HUGE amount of pods to eat, at least 100 lbs of lr that is well established and full of pods. he will wipe out your pod population in a very short time. you may not even notice as it takes these fish up to 6 months to slowly starve to death. I hope you can get him to eat frozen supplements. do a search on the board to see what else he may eat.
