i would have to suggest you don't purchse one for a 50g. I think that the tank couldn't sustain a big enough pod population for the mandrian. Do you have a lot of live rock??? Do you have pods??? Someone may say that you can but i think that a 50 g is to small to have a healthy mandrian. but thats just me.

Do they even stay out where you can see them? I've never owned one, nor have I ever known anyone who has, which is why I'm asking.

I actually ordered one from here last night( i was drunk and not thinking 
) and I have probably around 50-60 lbs of rock, cleaner shrip, and a true purc. I had the tank running for nearly 4 months with no fish, only a brittle star. there is a huge pod population, do you think it will be alright?? thanks very much

I have at least 70lbs of live rock in my 47 with a thriving Mandarine Goby that is the prize of my tank. I've had him in my tank for about 7 or 8 months. Put him in before I knew to WAIT! but I guess there is an exception to EVERY rule! He stays out in the open just grazing away all day. He'll stop and turn his head to look at me when Im watching! He's great!
