How large is your tank? How much live rock per gallon do you have? How old was the tank and LR before the Goby was introduced? Unfortunately Mandarins starve to death over time (1-6 mons.) without the live micro fauna generated in mature reef rocks. It does not matter how much they eat it’s all like Twinkies without their native live food. They require a 50-gallon or better tank with 2lbs LR per gallon to generate a large enough community of amphipods and copepods to support one mandarin and NO competition for the micro fauna.
Another chance is that you are viewing your mandarin either right before or after the night cycle when they take on their subdued night color but starvation is the likely cause I’m sorry.

how large is the mandarin.
Like most fish they dont seem as bright as they did when young.
When i got my mandarin it was a good bit smaller and alot more vivid color. Now its almost double in size but the colors are not as vivid.

I have noticed this as well with mine. When I turn on the lights in the morning, he is rather dull colored...but within 10-20 mins, he is back to being his bright colored self. Mine sleeps in funny spots too, I would think that he would find one of the nice nooks and crannies that I have in my LR, but he prefers to sleep on the bare spot where my maroon has shimmied away all of the LS (fun to watch...but why does he do this). It is also surprising because the maroon won't allow any other critters back there, but he leaves the mandarin alone???
