Manetic Rock

Earlier this week I was reading one of my Coral Magazines and saw this fack rock with magnets. The idea is to be able to put the rocks on the glass or the back of the tanks. I thought about doing something like this when I saw it in person while in Orlando. We went to a fish shop and the srore had done this to their display tank. It looked real ........uhm....... different, in a good way though. I liked it because it gave a 3D look to the tank.
Any thoughts on this subject or has anyone seen this before?

I have seen it before but on a small scale one or two small frags. If you do it, you have to think about how heavy it will be when the corals will be full grown. If you go cheap and small on the magnet then it may not be strong enough to hold when fully loaded with corals years later.

I agree, the fish shop had a few Zoa's on one and some Duncans on the other.
I did see some that were bigger rocks for bigger or heavier corals. Do you thing there is a way to do this DIY? I know I may have to coat the magnets with something.
I hope (wink wink) yo get a superman monti sometime in the future and I think that would look really cool to have that on the back drop or part of the glass

I have an old Tunze Turbelle Magnetic Holder that I been eyeballing they are real strong. Was thinking of getting some Aquarium Epoxy and covering one. But any Super Strong Ceramic Magnets would work if they were strong enough for your plans.

Yeah it's definitely been done diy by plenty of folks. At one point there was a member here who was inquiring about it because he wanted to make and sell his own. I believe you're going to want to look into epoxy coated magnets.

gotcha, thankya,
If I coat the magnets won't that lesson the grip factor
If you get the right size neodymium magnets then you won't have to worry about grip. Have to worry more about how you're going to get them off lol. I believe you'd want to set the rock in place and then slide the outside magnet in place. They're pretty strong so you don't want them to jump out of your hand and crack the glass.

This thread got me thinking - what if someone made rocks with some magnets drilled and epoxied into base rock and then make magnetic frag plugs?

To true, and what Snake implied, I plan on doing it myself. I just don't want the magnet to leak out any toxins in the system. Still in the planning stages.
