Wow!!! this hobby is really getting high tect.I went to my salt water store yesterday. and they had sold all of there corals.Starting over again. This time they have these large tanks about waist high about a foot deep where the corals go.About 5 feet over the top of them there is these great big refugiums,With mongro plants growing out of them. I mean big plants about 4 feet high, the root ball is in the refug. The trees trunks are about 3 inches in dia. Thay are waiting for it to cycle and then in goes all the new coral. Amazing. Talk about high tect.

it's nothing really new, people have been using mangroves in their fuges for a long time now. Yes it works great but it is high maintenance because you have to clean the leaves because they export salt out of their leaves and if a leave falls into the water you need to get it out asap so it doesn't kill your tank.

yeah, some guy online custom fit a screen so when the leaves fell they wouldnt hit the water. Mangroves really do help out your nitrate levels too.

3rd best, best natural solution.
numbers 1 and 2 or Poly-Filtration Pads and Purigen.

I'm thinking about putting a fuge right next to my DT with mangroves and some other marine plants i think that'd be really cool.

Mangrvoves are A NATURAL "biological method" of nitrate reduction, Not Mechanical, so where do we disagree?

From the information I have read I have gathered that they are not nearly as effective as some macro algaes such as cheato because they are very very slow growers and for them to be used effectively you'd need a lot of plants. They would not be my first choice for nutrient export.
I had a little one in my fuge and the growth was almost non detectable over the course of a few months and during the same time period my cheato grew at least 10x in size.

yeah, i don't think one mangrove is going to do much, but 20 of them probably do the trick.
