I was wondering if i could keep a mangrove in my sump w/o sand. Or is it a must that they live in sand? This is just a spurr of the moment question.

we are using LR as our biological filtration, and i think a mangrove would look really cool in there. plus i have read that they are great nitrate removers. We have slightly hish nitrates.
Mangroves are not great nitrate removers as they are slow growers and if you don't harvest anything you have really not removed the nitrates. They are just pent up in the mangrove.
If you are looking to reduce nitrates via plantalgae life I suggest some sort of macro algae in the sump that you can harvest as it grows.
well we have cheato, and all, but it is kind of a pain. It keeps dying. We havent had very good luck with it, and i was on a local website and a person was selling Mangroves that were 12-15 inches tall and had leaves. that was the only reason i asked. like i said a spur of the moment question.

the mangrove will grow leaves using the nitrates and they regularly drop old leaves and grow new leaves.
Yes, they will consume Nitrate. Spanko was commenting on the rate of consumption I believe. It is so slow that I was barely able to measure the uptake in a 10 gallon tank with 12 Mangroves.
