Mangrove trees

I was just wondering if anyone had ever put them in their display. I want to do a fairly natural environment for my next fowlr tank. I would like to have a fairly deep sand bed on one side and plant the tree in it, I just thought it would look nice

it won't be a natural environment. the fish you will purchase don't live in habitats that have mangrove trees in them. mangroves are in shallow, marshy areas. also, you'll need to stick the top out of the water. you will have to have either a super deep sand bed, or a super shallow tank to accomplish your design. you'll also need to hang a better light over the plants.
what i would do is add a refugium next to your display. use the mangroves there, and add some other, ornamental algae as well.

TTT, because I'm interested in doing mangroves in the future, and its something that's discussed as 'possible', but I've never heard of it actually being done.

Well what I wanted to do was to have like a 8" sand bed on the left side of a 20 gal sloping to a 2 inch bed. I wanted to do something like that with fish who were more likely to be found in that environment. I was gong to do tons of research on inverts and fish. I already know how I want to set up a canopy it will be raised above the tank about 6 inches, but I have no idea as to how I was going to keep fish from jumping but I figured I'd cross that bridge when I came to it. I have a friend with rather large mangroves with pretty established root systems. Oh well I'll look more into it.

By the way, where did any of you get your trees? I can only find mangroves on e*ay. I dont really want to buy from there, there are no lfs around here that carries them..... Thanks for any help.

I doubt it would kill anything, just make sure you have them in a container likes the post above and that the tops stick out of water.
It's always good to experiment with stuff. But I'm not going to lie, I want you to do it so I know if it works well haha. I might try it if it works.

before you guys go through all this trouble, you know that mangroves are a very poor form of nutrient export, right? you need a alot of plants in order to make a difference.

I live in South Florida...We find these floating in the water all the time.

Again, Mr X is correct...The only reason I have these in my tank is because I got them for free, and I wanted to see If I could grow them...But yes, they are very poor at exporting nutrients and with a larger numer of them, they will deplete you Mag. level.

I've seen them used in great quantities with freshwater tanks, but in a tank like that the mag level isn't important. But with cheato and other macroalgaes, these are not very popular.

I like the way they look, thats the only reason. I just would like the look of an actual tree growing out of it. It would be fowlr with the exception of the trees and maybe some macro algae in the hob fuge or in the tank itself.

Quite frankly I just dont buy anything on "sleaze-bay" as you so eloquently put it. I do not trust places like that where you buy from people who may or may not be held accountable for their product. I prefer to buy from reputable sites and from local stores.

I just like how they look. It's not about functionality as much for me.
(To be honest, I don't know if I just made up a word or not)
