Sand in a sump could be a problem. Sand in a dedicated refugium or in a 'fuge' that is in a separate compartmentfrom the pump within a sump should not be a problem as long as you are mindful of the water flow through the refugium. Does that make sense?
But you are right that sand and pumps do not mix well!

You have to separate them. Where your pump is there isn't sand. Using baffles and such. I'm kind of going quazi deep with about a 3 inch sand bed.
For all you out there, I have chaeto too. and calpernia if any want to donate any greens to my fuge feel free.
But just wondering about the feasability of a mangrove grove, becuase I have alot of room in the sump. And I like the tree.
Oh i was only have way kidding about donating if you wish to contact me please use my email at stdreb27@shsu.edu I'll be more than happy to accept any free junk. (Hey I'm shameless I'm a poor college student) Really

i do have the pump in a diffrent area of the sump. my sump is the berlin style sump so it have to bags that the water flow into then into the large area then i has a little sponge like filter shelf where i have the chemipure and stuff then it goes to the pump area. i have to pumps in that area one for the tank and one for the uv light which then outputs back into the larger area of the sump.
is that how i should have it working. if so wont the output of the uv light stir up the sand. or will that sponge shelf hold it back?
