How big do mantis's (manti pl,??) have to be to be a danger to the glass?
I'm not sure as far what size they start to be a threat. It also depends if they are spearers or smashers. My Peacock is at 5 inches and at times will randomly pop the side of the tank. If had had glass, I fear I would have water all over.

I can't imagine them being able to break say 1/4 glass especially if it is tempered.

You know I have never heard anything regarding thickness or types of glass. There is a user here that used to be around called "The JOP." He has a chip in his tank from his mantis. Crazy little devils!!!!
"There are a half dozen species capable of breaking a standard glass aquarium," says biologist Roy Caldwell a professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Including, of course, the peacock mantis, which gets about 7 inches (17 cm) long.

That is almost laughable, a "standard Aquarium" Does that mean 10 gallon Walmart tank? What is a standard aquarium?

I think a guppy could crack a walmart 10!!!!
Here is more from Dr. Roy:
"Stomatopods can indeed break glass. I have had animals break out of a variety of glass aquaria and keep big animals in Plexiglas. They also can cause physical damage. I was contacted by a surgeon from South Africa who tried to grab a large O. scyllarus and ended up losing a finger that was mangled, became infected, and had to be amputated. I have personally had more than my share of blood-lettings from animals as small as 3 cm."

Finally I've heard of someone with broken glass. I've always heard oh yeah they can break glass but never heard of a story. Now I can point to some first hand experience. Got to wonder a doctor who can't disinfect his finger?

I have seen a show on the discovery channel . There was a "smasher" Mantis hunting some kind of shrimp . The shrimp slipped into a glass jar or bottle of some kind . The mantis came upon it and then POP the glass was shatterered By the mantis . Granted it was super thin but none the less broken.
I think the glass on a 10 or 20 gallon tank might be thin enough to be broken but on a larger tank with thicker glass I dont think it would be such an issue . Thats just my thoughts though

here is my mantis

well She is leaving tonight. Giving her away sicne I am taking down that tank and making my lagoon tank.
she isnt green anymore but turned totally white. She was pretty tame and friendly. I would put my fieeding stick in with the squid and she would come out of her den and gently pull it off the stick like she has manners
