Mantis tank Diary

I recently started a 30g species only tank for a peacock mantis shrimp. I pulled the water and rock from my 280g tank and added 20 pounds of crushed coral, 20 pounds live sand and 15 pounds of regular sand. It's got a aqau clear 50 HOB filter. I broke up a bunch of rock for him to decoratate with and added a 2" pvc tunnel. I've read through Joe's thread so thanks for the ideas and my questions now are do I need a powerhead and does anyone else have futher suggestions? Heres a pic. And yes there is a piece of acrylic on the bottom of the tank

wow lucky
I once had a mantis tank but suprisingly, while i was gone, the water started to get a leak and the heater came out of the water. The heater then over heated and cought fire. It melted its plastic and fell into the water, possibly saving the house from burning down. But The wall was chared and the house was FULL of smoke.
Like 20 fire trucks came to our house cause we didnt know were it was coming from and the whole fire house had nothing better to do!.

Sorry to hear about the loss
I'm real excited about this tank, my water is testing good and now I'm just waiting for the LFS to get me my Mantis

I go with a power head just to aid in the LR filtration.
IMO acrylic is more important around the lower perimeter of your tank than at the bottom so I would go with four pieces about three inches high keep me posted on your progress
BTW LOVE the Dobie

Thanks Joe, I will definitely add the perimeter acrylic and I have a power head on the way. The mantis hasn't been added yet so that'll be easy to do. Hows your mantis doing?

She looks great, Have you tried any corals in the tank with her? I've added a few zoas that were in my 280g into my mantis tank to see how they work out.
