Maracyn II cycling of tank?

So a while back Sep educated me in how Maracyn II actually does what it does. Here is my question...I have a cowfish that developed popeye. I can see a small air bubble within the large protrusion. If Maracyn II works by killing off all bacteria good and bad, is there any sense in cycling a qt? I have tried good water conditions and vitamins in food, and it is making no progress. If the onset of the popeye was not introduced by bacteria will Maracyn II even help? If not...what other options does one have in dealing with popeye? I have never had a problem with popeye until now...usually just clears up in a week or so.

I'm no expert but I think the medicine along with very good water quality will solve the problem. You may not even need to use the medicine if you can do daily water changes in the QT. I recently set-up a QT tank useing all water from my display along with filters from it. I let it run a day and then added a fish. I did however see a small Nitrite spike the day following the addition of the fish but it quickly dissapeared and he made it through the 4 week cycle fine.
Good Luck

That's kinda the thing though..my water quality is already good, and I am unsure if the medicine will do anything if the cause is not bacterial...it may very well be, but it is only effecting one eye...it is not cloudy...aside from the little airbubble the lens is perfectly clear...just sticks out way further than it should. Poor fish probably has walleye vision in that one eye

I have personally never used a cycled tank when medicating. But I know most do on this forum.
What were you medicating with? I can't remember atm if with maracyn you are supposed to do water changes, or if it needs to accumulate. If it has to accumulate obviously water changes would not be good. Hmm, well last time I dosed my Longhorn with Maracyn...it was a cycled QT, but then again if maracyn kills off the bacteria, I guess it was uncycled
. This is too confusing.

Thge package insert states when used as directed, their med does not interfere with the biological filter. But then it also recommends using a hospital tank in another sentence.

I've medicated a lot of things over the years. I always use a hospital tank.

Do you have the instructions on hand or are you missing those.... or do you not understand their instructions?

Currently I do not have the product on hand. Don't want to buy it unless I think it will help. I am just trying to remember back 6 months or so, when I last used it. Can't remember if I did water changes before dosing or not

Did the fish develop this in the QT or the DT? Where is the fish now? Maracyn 2 cannot be used in an uncycled QT because you will not be able to keep up with water changes and keep the right amount of Maracyn in the tank. In a cycle QT, SOME biological bacteria will die, but not all. How long have you had the cowfish? Do you know what the pop eye is from? I would just dose all of his foods with a rotation of Vitachem and Zoecon, unless it is really bad. Having the fish in a poor environment will only make it worse. Help him heal himself.

I have had the cowfish since august or september...perhaps a little earlier even. The fish is in the DT at the moment. I am unsure what caused the popeye, but am thinking perhaps it was a microbubble given the appearence of a bubble within the "popeye". Like I said my water is good, and I have been using vitachem for about 3 weeks now...it's just not helping. I will get a qt cycling, and try Maracyn. My only parameter that is showing anything remotely off is nitrates somewhere between 10-20 ppm in the current tank.

Pick up some Zoecon while you are waiting for the QT to cycle. Zoecon has more fatty acids and amino acids. It will help tremendously, I swear

It takes many weeks for the fish to heal himself. It is the best course of action though if it is not too bad.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. Thanks Sep
