hade one because of the small footprint it was poorly designed did not work in water level of less than 6 inches of water and you have to remove the damn thing each time the cup needs emptying and is a monster micro bu bble maker other than that

Why do you have to remove it to take it off don't you have to unscrew it to get the cup off? does it pull out a lot of gunk?

seen it in action. pretty good bubbles (kind of turbulent in the body but a good amount of bubbles. I'd say as much as my small octopus), was working (producing skimate). definately seen better pinwheels (they say needlewheel but its a pinwheel like everybody's using these days). the actual pumps are maxi-jet utility pumps so they should be ultra reliable. have heard it works pretty good but not $200 and $300 good. my LFS sells them for this price but I've only seen them for a little cheaper online ($170 and $260).

the marineland i tried[my lfs just got them in a few months ago] is imo poorly designed because the collection cup has a flat seal that you have to set on the bubble column seal with no guide and then try to line up the threadson the

[hr]
down . im sorry for the untechnical terms . its nearly impossible to do this in the sump with one hand. if your sump is located in small space under your tank its very hard to line up thecup.the other design flaw again imo only is the outflow on the unit. its shrouded by a plastic casing and you cant add an elbow to change the direction ofr the flow. even after following their break in period instructions it produced alot more micro bubbles into to the sump and then obviously the dt., than other skimmers i've had in the 175-200 range.last the ajustment valve airline valve isnt a fine tuneable as others.others may have had better luck but after two weeks of owning one i returned my lfs said too many complaints from others and isnt going to carry anymore

so were you impressed? Also was it pulling dark skimate? Im really thinking about getting one because it is the only one that will fit in my sump and the HOB skimmers get in thw way with my lighting because of my tank being 13"wide.

from a local forum (pics and vids dont really prove much but...)
tank is a 65g FOWLR and the only fish is a small undulate trigger fed once daily with 2yr old established rock (I wish I could just post the link instead of reporting it lol). very light bioload so one shouldn't expect much in the way or dark nasty crud. on second look not quite the bubble production of my octopus (maybe as much, hard to say because its coming out much more turbulent on the marineland. mine has the little inner tube too but the bubbles dont come out in a cyclone like that, has bubble plate). they paid $159 online for theirs ( I paid $150 for my octopus).
four day of break in
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t=P8250025.flv
morning one after 3 week break in and fiddling

3 days later

no mention of micro bubbles though that is HIGHLY variable from tank to tank, set up to set up

as you can see there is NOTHING in this tank

the lone fish (bare bottom too)

would I use it? almost did I just didn't want to be the test dummy. Kind of wish I had since I had to reconstruct (read tear out) baffles and modify my octopus to make it fit in the skimmer section.

Thanks alot for all the info. IMO it seem to work well for just one fish! I think i will be the test dummy!I hope the break in period will be faster with a heavier bioload.

Actually I use one for my 110g, and I love it. No micro bubbles, pulls dark green goop. Only qualm I had was the above-mentioned difficulty taking the top off for emptying....you have to

[hr]
it on and off (!?!?) but I was thinking of modding it by drilling a hole and adding an airline-tube drain into a 1 gallon jug.

Here is an update on this skimmer. I got it a week ago for my 80 gal and after messing with it everday i finally called marineland and they gave me abunch of tips that are not with the directions. Anyways after doing what the guy told me to do the skimmer is working great so far. I will give ypdate if anyone would like.

and some pictures too! most skimmers arent working their best within the 1rst few week or two. In a month or two it should really come alive.

Just a newbie/curiosity question: why do skimmers need a "break in" period? What about the process causes them to work better after they've been running a while? Are we looking for bacterial build-up to form? If so, would that mean we shouldn't "clean" our skimmers too often?

the theory as I've always heard is manufacturing oils from the plastics have to dissapate and a slime coating from the aquarium have to build up on the surfaces before they work properly. running them in vinager or pouring some old skimmer skimate down them is suppose to speed up the process. I dont know how true the actual physics of that is. I do know there is some reason new skimmers dont work well because it happens with EVERY skimmer I've had. the older the skimmer the better they've worked for me. And when I put an old skimmer on a tank thats been out of use for long periods of time it works immediately.

I wish I had known this before, when I first hooked up my skimmer I thought something was wrong with it, I adjusted everything possible. and now after reading this thread, I realize it was cause it was new..after a couple of weeks, like you said, it worked great

your using a 20g long as your sump right tdog? would a reef octo nw110 fit in there do you think?
As long as you layout your baffles for it....i don't see why not i think it is 9x7 footprint for that skimmer
