Maroon Clown

I have read mixed reviews on this subject, and figured I'd post here to get to the bottom of things. I wanted to get a pair of Maroon clowns (white stripe) for my 55 gal. reef. Is this a good idea? I've read that two in the same tank can be trouble...
Will they just pick on one another?

From what I have read, b/c I have never had a WSM, is to put one big female in with one small male.

just be warned .... Maroon Clownfish are extremely aggressive .. in one of my friend's 20 gallon tank all he has is a bunch of coral and an anemone and a pair of maroons .. and if he so much as puts his hand in his tank the maroons will visciously attack his hand .. he has to wear a thick glove every time he puts his hand in the tank

True I had to git rid of a maroon clown 'cause he would fight the other fish in my tank. He also would come after my hand when I put it in the tank. When I had an anemone he would atack the glass when my daughter would put her face close to it.

I have a white stripe maroon clown. Have not had it for very long yet. But I have been told they can be aggressive. The gold stripe apparently are more aggressive. But ah.... the beauty of them is something else. IMO they are truly the most beautiful of the clown fish family. I love that deep maroon color they have.
Another thing you could do is to get two that have been in the LFS for a while in the same tank and make sure that one is smaller than the other. But that still does not guarantee anything either.
Good Luck.....

but I have a very large Maroon Clown and it doesn't bother anything in my tank. Although I'm starting to think he's the one that knocks down rocks in my tank. My Yellow Tang is more aggressive than him.
Good luck.

They are protecting the anemone. My lfs guy has one about 12" or more w/ 2 true percs in it. A couple of times I've wanted something he has at the bottom of the tank and the clowns nip his arm till he gets out of there. I think he does it just to make the kids that come in have a good laugh.

I bought a mated (???) pair of yellow stripe maroon clowns from my lfs and put them in my 92g corner tank with a bubble tip anenome. also had saebe clowns, tang, coral beauty and lawnmower blenie. the maroon clowns were doing fine for about 2 months then something kept them cornered in the upper back corner.
I was able to catch the two maroon clowns and moved them and their bubble tip (with its rock) to my 120g that i use as a refugium.
In the 120g i have just 6 green chromis and the 2 maroon clowns. the clowns are not the least aggressive. i would say they are more shy.
so goes to show even fish have different personality's.

i have a mated pair of maroon clown fish right now and the strange thing is one is a gold stripe and the other is a white stripe. the gold stripe didn't get it's gold until a year after i had it. if you want a mated pair, the best way to do it is to buy two small ones together so that they can decide which one is gonna be male and which one is gonna be female. by the way i must have the nicest maroons cause they don't mind me at all when i put my hand in the tank, even when i put my hands in and around their nest. my bad i had "i hate a pair of maroon clown" it's i have.

Mine is mostly ok w/ people in his cave, but every once in a while, he has to show em who's boss and goes after everyone that's gets close to his cave for a minute. Then he calms down, he even lets swim through, so long as they don't hang out. I have a 35g w/ 1 small maroon, 3".

I have had a GSM for about 2 years now. I bought him...now her when he...now she was about an inch and a half long. Now she's about 3inches and I decided to get her a mate. I found a BEAUTIFULLY colored GSM at the store and decided to give it a shot. I was worried that they would fight and she would kill the smaller one. When i put him inthe tank she saw him right away. she swam over to him and showed him who's boss for about a minute. Now, a day later, they are always together and in LOVE...lol. I'm gonna get a LTA for them in the coming months.
I had heard all these stories about Maroons and how agressive they are and, in my case, none of that was true. Mine is actually friendly towards my hand and almost seems inquisitive. HTH.

We have a small ( 1" ) wsm in a24 gal. aquapod at work and I reached in to get a guy a orange sponge out and it went crazy. It pecked my hand, arm, and fingers the entire time. We also have some in other tanks in the store but I've never had problems with them. So I guess they're like most other fish each one is different.

Thanks for the input everyone! I just got a pair of them yesterday! Unfortunately, they aren't a mated pair. They are about the same size, though. So hopefully, they'll be ok. They are in my QT now, and seem to be doing alright. One of them seems to be establishing itself as the dominant one, but it really isn't "attacking". I'm going to keep an eye on them and hope for the best.
