Maroon vs. Percula

I heard from someone that the Maroons were a little agressive. Is that ture? Personally I like them better, especially the way they swim. I do want clowns though, so what are your opinions?

I disagree with the statement that Maroon are a little aggressive - they are VERY aggressive.
Percula are fairly docile but they don't get very big.

Maroons typically are more aggressive than the Perculas. Perculas do well with each other in a tank. Maroons on the other hand like to be the only Maroon in the tank. However, I recently introduced a baby maroon with my older one and they are living happily together in the anemone. I am sure you will be happy with whatever choice you make. Good luck

If they're agressive, and get big by the way Bang Guy seemed to state it, I'll stick with the Perculas. I only have a 30 gal, and I'd really like a pair. Thanks guys. =)

i introduced a baby gold stripe maroon to my older gold strip maroon too. they are a lot more elegant and nicer looking than perculas. but i love perculas too. i couldnt decide on what to get so i got both

not in the same tank tho.

Maroons are supposed to be hermaphrodites. And from that I've read a single animal in a tank will grow large and become a female. I've read that if you add another make sure it's smaller and it should become a male and the two should pair up. I've yet to test this but it seems many others have done it with success.

Matt,
Just to clarify all clowns are hemaphrodites not just maroons.
AND Maroons get BIG. I have a pair in my 150g Aggressive and the female is almost 6 inches long, the male has stayed small but,,, Ive had them for about 2 years and the female was large when I got her (about 3 or 3.5 inches) but has grown alot since. Mine are evil, I am more scared to put my hands in my tank because of her than because of my 4 triggers...

I know all clowns are hermaphrodites. Alot of fish are for that matter. I think it depends on individuals personalitys. I also have a huge maroon (5") and have seen some nasty ones. So size and growth of maroon's depends on which --- and how many basically. If for some reason your female died the male should change --- and grow larger.

They will outgrow your 30.

Holy cow, Bang Guy. o_O So, are the Maroons only agressive to other clowns and human hands, or will they decide on attacking the other fish as well? "Agressive" can be defined in so many forms. Even after the debate, they still seem more appealing to me. These would be going in a thirty gallon too, but I'll probably be upgrading to at least a 55 in a few years. Even if I don't and they outgrow, it'll be back to the LFS for the little...er...big guys.

They are aggressive to whatever they feel 'invades' they territory. So, a 6" maroon clown with have a considerable sized territory, read most, if not all of a big tank like 150gal.
Here's some damage done to a Heniochus by a large clownfish...

Temperment aside get the occelaris. A maroon is going to get too large for a 30g. And they grow pretty fast too. I've never seen one try and bit a hand, good to know. I'll be sure not to try and see what it feels like.

I can only comment on what I consider typical behavior for a Maroon, all fish have their subtle behaviour differences. I would guess that a Maroon in a 30 gallon tank would claim the entire tank as it's territory. They will fight with almost anything entering their territory, other fish, crabs, snails, etc. For some bizzare reason they seem to ignore Banggai.
I would not recommend Maroons in a 30 gallon, Percula or Ocellaris are good choices though.

Alrighty then, I'll stick with my percs. Thanks guys. I will definetly be getting a maroon for my frag tank, when I get that set up though. I love them too much to give up entirely on them. Thanks all.
