It didn't sound right that the water would have receded if they were going to be hit. A Tsunami is a different animal than a typical wind generated wave. It has a wall of water pushing it from below the surface. I would think the receding water was an indication that wave had passed by in the general area and was pulling water away from the island in it's wake. Haven't been able to find anything on that but definitely fascinating stuff.
The receding water is usually a sign that the wave is coming. Tsunamis are not all that big when traveling over open ocean but as they near shore they rear up and pull water from all the surrounding ocean to get their height. This includes sucking water away from shorelines.
