I find myself taking my home work out to do it and i stumple upon my math. this is the basic jist
Y= -X + 8
X Y=______ Y (X,Y)
and i realize.. there's no way i can do this with out numbers.. and she gave us absolutely NO directions... only a nother month or so of her.........

I am not sure exactly what level of math you are at, so I don't know what type of answer your teacher is looking for.... but here would be my guess
y=-x +8
x= 8 -y
x y = (-x+8)(8-y) y(x,y)
= xy-8x-8y+64

the (x,y) is a point in space . . . . its not factored into the equation.
I still don't see what the issue is here. Where are you having trouble?
What you have posted is perfectly correct.
this is the equation of a line:
y =mx +b
if you are given (x,y) then just plug those numbers into the equation. If you are given one, you can solve for the other.
y=the vertical distance from the horizontal axis
x=the horizontal distance from the vertical axis
m=the slope of the line; rise over run, how many units up over how many units over
b=the point at which the line intercepts the vertical axis

I believe that jkvjl and myself gave you what you needed. It looks like the teacher is looking for a function of (x,y). That means that both x and y will be variables in the answer. The same way as f(x) is a function of x, meaning you would solve for y with respect to x. I could be wrong, it has been a long time since I took pre-algebra. But I don't see what else it could be asking for.

To the best of my knowledge this is the rest of it confused:
If your left with .....xy-8x-8y+64
doesnt that reduce to... (xy-8x)-(8y+64)
and factor out ...........2x(y-8)-8(y+8)
which simplfies to........2x-8 (y-8)(y+8)
Which simplafies to 2x-8 (y-8)^2 (just in case the symbol (^2) means squared
i don't want ot insult your intelligence)
I believe the perfect square of a negitive is one + and one -
I may have taken this too far What grade level?

This is wrong . . . . . the y(y,x) is NOT part of the equation. Its a function - Y - of the point in (x,y) in a standard coordinate plane.
If that really is all the info that your teacher gave you, then you have a horrible math teacher and he/she should be reported to administration. Pre-Algebra is one of the foundations of all further match courses and without it, you are going to have a VERY hard time in future courses.

Anyone want to help with my Trig/Pre Calc class? I swear its fun stuff!
j/k It sounds like you have as good of a math teacher as I have. My teacher is fine until she starts to skip steps to which she doesn't bother to tell us.:thinking:

OMG!:scared: THE HORROR!
My head is spinning just reading this thread.
Now I remember why I flunked Algebra!
Whenever my kids have math homework they are sent to thier dad. I wouldn't want it to be my fault if they failed.
Good Luck to ya! Lisa
