The whole inch per gallon theory is not a good rule line at all. For niether salt or fresh water. In FW terms I only see it usable with small community fish in a small tank. It all depends on the tank & fish. Activity levels, waste levels, & aggresion is different for each species of fish regardless of size.
I have me a 55g at the mopment cycling & I really like yellow tangs & wanted one before researching everything. Now I've decided against that, even though I plan on upgrading in months if everything goes good with this tank & my bank account is looking good at that time. Though since that isn't fact I'll just wait on the tang.

You tanks not stable, you have a sick fish in there. And the tank could still be cycling, we don't know because we can never get accurate readings from you.

Absolutely true. I agree with this 100%. The bioload for one fish is not the same for another species (neccesarily) so making a rule about fish size would be on average, but if you pick fish that eat more, grow faster, etc. then your rule doesn't work at all.
