We will be vacationing in Maui in 2 weeks. I have yet to find a place where they see Yellow Tangs. This is something I really want to see. I called a few places and the lady said she doesnt know what a Hawaiian Yellow Tang is? c'mon . Even though the trigger is the state fish I would assume they know what a Yellow tang is. Oh well.
If anyone has been there please let me know what we should do.
Thanks in advance
Nick

When we vacationed in Maui last year, I didn't see any yellow tangs at all. I did see a ton of Achilles tangs tho.

Because I have one as a pet and It would be cool to see them in the wild. Other fish will be awesome too as long as I get to see a Yellow Tang

Let us know if you are lucky enough to spot a Koi Yellow tang. A rare animal that I beleive can be spotted in the Hawaiian waters..if you are lucky. it has colorings similar to a Koi hence the name.
I have been trying to locate one for purchase but have been unsuccessful. I am not certain if they are available or if regulations prevent their removal from the reef.

That's where we snorkled, and missed all of the yellow tangs. I did see some Moorish Idols, though. They were just gorgeous. Even better were the dolphins that would escort the tour boat and the whales that we spotted in the distance.
We went with the Pacific Whale Foundation tour boat ( Ocean Voyager ), and couldn't have asked for a better experience. 100% of all profits earned by this company go to preserve the oceans, and I really liked their outlook and desire to protect the environment. Here is a link to their website:

Molokai? separate island?
You can take submarine underground rides and see the sea wilderness!!
I've seen stick fishes, caught a lethal pufferfish, sting rays, manini's -- I don't know the american name its a striped fish -- looks like a big stripped damsel. This is on Oahu - Aloha tower!

no, molokini is the volcano in which you swim in the crater of it- thats where the boats anchor up to snorkel. as soon as the drop the ladder, hundreds of fish are everywhere- mostly big triggers. water is about 35 feet deep. on the other side of the crater, the water falls to 600 feet deep.

As soon as you land, get to the "exchange building" and get your American Dollars changed to Hawaiian monies. The exchange rate goes up each day towards the evening. Ha! Joke Haole, had ya going. No, really. I lived on Oahu 10 years and loved it. Hanaumama Bay on Oahu has idols and tangs. I never snorkled any other islands. Best advice I can give is LEAVE THE VOLCANO ROCKS there. Bad luck to bring them back or take them off the islands. Ensure too that you get some pineapples and bring back. The taste is not even close to canned. Have fun, I'm jelous

Hawaii is a state in the US not some other country. I wasn't thrown off by the exchange building thing. It would be very tempting to bring back a piece of rock though. probably wont. I will leave Hawaii as was as I got there.

Don't take any Lava rocks -- remember the episode on Brady bunch, well known on island that it brings on bad luck to those who takes "Pele's Rocks"
When you go there -- you may hear the word "Haole" don't be offended because it means Caucassian in Hawaiian.
Oh, Don't forget to get a plate lunch -- Chicken katsu -- please have one for me! Have fun and those sunsets are really beautiful!!!

went to hawaii in october for the honeymoon. IT was absolutely beautivul!!! I was very disappointed, though. Went snorkeling - not sure where, and the only thing i saw was some sea turtles. Don't get me wrong, they were awesome, but i was hoping to see some really cool fish!
