Maui, Hawaii

We went to Oahu in August. Rode the Atlantis Sub. Saw yellow tangs, White tip reef shark, sea turtles. The reef off of Waikiki had been killed by logging years ago and they are trying to repair the damage so it wasn't very colorful....very little live coral. Same company has a sub in Maui. Look in travel guides for discount coupons. We booked thru Hawaii travel network and saved a few $$ and used a coupon for free video. They told us the Maui dive site was more colorful.....corals hadn't been killed off by white people yet. BTW many Hawaiians don't like us mainlanders since we helped overthrow their govt. and exiled their queen.

It was incredibly tempting to smuggle about 50 small assorted hermits back home. The North Shore was LOADED with crabs of all sizes, types and colors. They get stuck in ponds when the tide comes in along with gobies and other small fish. Be sure to leave "tourist land" and do some exploring.....the locals seem to open up if you are genuinely interested in their history and wildlife. You can see some really cool stuff if you ask the right people.....without paying the tourist rate.
:happyfish
And if you really like fish don't forget to try the grilled mahimahi.

I saw a lone yellow tang in Cancun in April. It was weird. I told this to my lfs buddy, and he said that's not normal.
I wish I would have bought a disposable water camera, we saw all kinds of weird things.

No not necessarily true about the locals, what is true is that if you are cool and don't talk like you know everything than we accept you -- well I speak for myself. Many tourist or new people to the island like to belittle the unique culture by thinking one is better than another.
I simply believe that the Hawaiian culture is full of love and aloha by majority of the people. I speak from experience because Im stuck here in KY land untiil I finish what I have to, but I MISS HOME!!!

Well not true about "many Hawaiians" I will admit that there is just some that feel that way, however when missionaries first came to Hawaii, they brought a lot of good thing to the island however they lacked to respect the culture. Now when you get people coming to the island and not respecting people/culture and thinking one superceeds the other wouldn't you be flammed?
Believe it or not, but I have encountered a few tourists with that attitude but for the majority of the people that I met, they were nice, pleasant, and plain and simple they were human beings.
But you are right about the Hawaiian Monarchy being overthrown long ago. And the indiginous group of Hawaiians are slowly diminishing (due to mixed marriages). seems to have the greatest impact - do you blame them for feeling that way? But this important piece of history occurence is not a grudge that ALL people (locals in Hawaii) hold against tourists. :happyfish

Aloha Keonia
We lived there 10 years and absolutely loved it. If it wasn't for my parents health, we would have never left. My son was born there and the only Hoele in the Kailua Hospital at the time. Looked funny. Ha! We have several Hawaiian families that we are a part of and I miss them dearly. The loved the culture and the ppl. Well, anyway, just wanted to say that! Aloha

I can't quite remember, as we did a 12-day cruise on the carnival spirit (BTW, i think we were the only people on this ship under 65...). We visited 5 different islands... and this was one of the excursions we did, as well as a waterfall tour - ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! I was born in hawaii, and my parents thought it would be nice to send me back there again. My middle name is Leilani.
I would love to go again, as my first experience wasn't as great as i thought it would be...

Hot863 -- Aloha back!! Yoiu must be talking about Castle Medical Center in Kailua! I love that side of the island. Actually there are lots of choice spots to fish at - especially at the Marine corp base. I miss home, hope to go back soon!!
It's so weird, I wasn't into SWF at home, but now I am!

Hey Jenn,
That must of been interesting being on a boat with older peeps? Nothing wrong with that but I know what you mean about hanging out with people your age! My friend just took a cruise to alaska and she said they had fun socializing with the workers on the boat - only young ones!! but the main thing is that it sounded like you had a great time there!!!
Hey.. we have something in common -- we were both born in a hospital from Hawaii!! Hee hee. You gotta get one of those Hawaiian Jewelry with your name inscribed "Leilani" have you seen them?
Don't mean to hijack this thread but I think Nluchau is probably in Hawaii now!! I hope they update what they saw!!

My mother was in the navy, so i was born at the tripler medical hospital in honolulu.
Hawaii was beautiful, but i was sick for 8 of the 12 days on my cruise...
, so i didn't get to do everything i wanted to.
I didn't get to go to a luau, or eat poi, or so many other things i wanted to do... Also, the poor hubby is a solar panel, so he doesn't like hot places (my parents kept insisting "hawaii isn't hot, hawaii isn't hot"... I'd like to kill them. it was like 85 degrees the whole time, which i beautiful for me, but the hubby likes it to be 60 and cloudy... weirdo...)
Anyway, i'm planning on going back sometime with my best friend, so we can truly see all of the sights!

1 My post obviously caused you some greif and for that I beg your forgiveness
2 I was simply stating what I encountered during my 2 wks there
3 If I knew everything I wouldn't be learning about fish from you
4 My wife's grandparents lived on Oahu for years so I had a little insight but no long time experience
5 I'm sorry that you feel I tried to belittle anyone
6 someone wanted to see tangs so I let them know where I saw them
7 If I'd known you were Hawaiian I would have asked you for info before I went
8 I did, however, ask my friend who is Samoan and has much family on Oahu
9 Thanks for your informative post
10 I must say that mahimahi is great with honey mustard

11 I better stop cuz I don't count so good

Hold your horses and don't jump to conclusions. It wasn't meant to you directly. I am actually referring to people who come to the island and act that way. I've encountered people like that, but not all people are like that. I've met a lot of kewl people while living on the island (basically all my life). I don't know everything and everyday brings a new learning experience. THis message board has been a very very helpful thing and I am glad to share what I know about fishes, Hawaii, and basically anything I can help with.
What I miss the most is going fishing and actually catching different types of fish than the good ole catfish Kentucky has!!

Just got back from Maui early this afternoon and boy did we have a good time. I got to see Yellow tangs right out from our hotel in about 3 feet of water. We also did the molokini trip and saw many other fish. Some saw a reef shark but it was in deeper waters. I will post pics ASAP.

i went to maui in May this year..mmmm, i can still smell the sugar cane burning. i was there on buisiness, so i didnt get to go in the water, but i did alot of driving. there is a little place to stop on the road to Hana, that has the best friggin fish taco's i've ever had, and they are cheap, and HUGE... which are two words you dont say much about food in Maui. the Ocean center was simply amazing! sure wish my work could afford me to live there... i miss the ocean. cant wait to see your pictures!!
